Chinese Ambassador WU Peng Attends the Inaugural Flight Ceremony of AWA Accra-Freetown Route
2018/05/22

On 21 May, 2018, Ambassador of the People's Republic of China to Sierra Leone H.E. WU Peng, joined with Hon. Mr. Kabineh M. Kallon, Minister of Transport and Aviation of Sierra Leone, Hon. Kwabena Darko-Mensah, Deputy Minister of Aviation of Ghana, Deputy High Commissioner of Ghana to Sierra Leone, representatives from Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority, Lungi International Airport and Local Community attended the Inaugural Flight Ceremony of Africa World Airlines (AWA) Accra-Freetown Route.

In his speech, Ambassador WU noted that, the commencement of AWA services in Lungi Airport is a good example of win-win cooperation among Ghana, Sierra Leone and China, which not only presents an opportunity for the Sierra Leonean aviation sector to expand airways, but also marks a continuous process of steady development in Sierra Leone.

He pointed out that, Africa is moving towards Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM). By synergizing the Belt and Road Initiative with the development strategies of African countries, China looks forward to further participating in African aviation and tourism cooperation. Sierra Leone has huge potential in the aviation industry and this potential can in return bring more economic benefits by making it a tourist destination. With more and more airlines following AWA extending their services to Sierra Leone, this will contribute to “the development of a sound and economically viable civil aviation system” as envisioned by H.E. President Bio in his New Direction Agenda and the Union of State.

AWA is a Ghanaian based joint enterprise between China Hainan Airlines, China-Africa Development Fund, Ghana Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) and SAS Finance Group. It has been providing excellent flight services in Ghana, Nigeria, Liberia, and now Sierra Leone.
